What is Gain in Audio? Gain vs. Volume
What is gain in audio? Gain vs. Volume
Gain and volume can be interchangeable.
It really depends on what instance you’re talking about.
TECHNICALLY… Gain is the INPUT and Volume is the OUTPUT of an audio signal.
so, for Example… On recording day when you’re setting your gain signal levels on your audio interface you are setting the input levels of your audio source.
The “sweet spot” of level people shoot for is around -18dbfs with the peaks of the audio around -6dbfs.
If you can set your input gain levels of your microphones for any instrument you are recording to around these levels, then you are setting your session up pretty good!
A lot of times people record WAY too hot and then the overall result of all the channels going into your master fader too hot causes nasty distortion and clipping. You don’t want that.
Gain Inside your plugins.
You also want to be aware of the input gain and output volume inside each of your plugins.
Your plugins also operate in that “sweet spot” of levels. So if your input gain is too hot you should adjust them inside the plugin or use another plugin that does this before the plugin you are needing to correct the issue on.
Pro tools has a “trim” plugin, and most DAWs have similar plugins, but with different names.
So just remember….
Gain = Input
Volume = Output
Here Is an in depth video about Gain Staging.

Best Audio Compression Technique WITHOUT using a compressor
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 роки тому
There is an audio compression technique that I like to use that does not even require a compressor to pull off. In most DAWs you have the ability to adjust the actual volume of the waveform before the volume fader on the same track. Clip Gain Pro Tools In my DAW, Protools, it's called "Clip Gain". Adjusting the level of the clip gain up or down affects the PRE-Fader volume. This allows you to m...
Dynamic Range Compression VS. Tonal Compression
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
Dynamic Range Compression VS. Tonal Compression. This is very important. When you compress a vocal or an instrument you need to know WHY you are compressing it. We have a tendency, and I’m just as guilty, of just compressing a track because that’s what you are supposed to do. But Why!? If you have a reason why you want or need to compress then your results will be better because you have a plan...
How to Make Lo Fi Hip Hop(ish) Music - Mess up your Tracks!
Переглядів 3895 років тому
A Lo Fi plugin is usually thought of when you think of adding "harmonic distortion" or "analog warmth" but I've recently learned that those two desirable outcomes are really not what Lo Fi is. "Lo Fi" or Low Fidelity are the musical imperfections that can be heard like misplayed notes or tape hiss. Typically you would reach for a low fi plugin to add some of that old school feel that music natu...
Lo Fi Plugin Pro Tools - Taming Harsh Vocals And Cymbals
Переглядів 9 тис.5 років тому
Most DAWs should have a stock Lo Fi plugin for you to try this technique on. Your DAW may not have this particular one, but the Lo Fi Plugin in protools can be useful in many ways. One way I like to use it is to tame harsh vocals and cymbals. You can bring down the sample rate, add just a little distortion and saturation, and then bring back in the presence with the “Anti-Alias” slider but with...
Andrew Scheps Parallel Compression Technique on The Master Bus!

I love learning things from the greats! Andrew Scheps falls under that category for sure. His credits include Hozier, Daughtry, Green Day, KALEO, Jay - Z, and soo many more. One of his techniques he uses is to set up parallel compression on the master bus, aka stereo bus or 2 bus. Sounds crazy right!? Sometimes you gotta think big and bold. n pro tools sends, PRE is ALWAYS after the plugins (doesn't matter if pre is on or not). The pre button is for pre-fader (not pre-plugin), so if you move the volume up or down it will still send the same amount of signal.

    I'm new to recording drums and have a Scarlett 18i20 interface. My headphones are connected in front to the first jack (outputs 7/8) and on MixControl, I set the mix to stereo as you said and made sure the mix is going to the proper outputs. I still cannot hear anything come out as I play! Much help would be appreciated.

    I know this video is 4 years old as I comment, but as a singer/songwriter I am just at this stage grappling with timing, sound bleed, and drag when trying to capture the magic. So the insight on this video is particularly valuable to me. Thanks for posting this, I’m happy it came up on my feed. It is so great to hear the perspective of an experienced sound engineer!😊.

    Quick Question. If I have pre -recorded drums or any other type of instrumentation, can I individually control how much level of those instruments I'm giving the singer on his mix? Also, If I mute everything I'm recording in my DAW (protools) and record, will it still record, even though tracks are on mute? Thanks.

    I’m having a major issue using my focusrite scarlet in pro tools. I am finding that although I have a good level going in without clipping the output gain is virtually non existent. The problem is definitely within pro tools because I sometimes use Reason intro and the volume is huge, so I’m using a compressor on vocals and guitars partly to boost the volume which is total pants basically They are just ghost tracks at the moment while I work on drums and other virtual instruments. I’m just a beginner to recording my own music as you can no doubt tell. This is a nightmare I have to admit. I’m having an issue with the focusrite causing a high pitch whine again it’s only on vocals and guitars on playback. Can you advise me what I need to do? The volume issue is definitely pro tools and it’s been there from day one however I noticed the scarlet is faulty the volume control is a bit crackly. So annoying I’m on a very tight budget but have considered getting a different audio interface Loving your UA-cam channel Only just discovered it now because I wanted a straightforward teaching tutorial on mixing in mono So I will definitely subscribe ✨

    Thank you so much for this. I’m learning to record my own music. The way you are doing it is a whole lot easier than other examples. The problem I am having is everything sounds good in my studio through my headphones however when listening to the mix in MP3 format for example I am having a nightmare with phasing. It just sounds awful! So some of my songs have a lot of plugins and virtual instruments. I’m noticing more of an issue with vocals and guitars which is a nightmare. I’m looking forward to doing this on all my songs. I’m so tired of tearing my hair out 😂

    Using compression for a more consistent level is good; adding gain with a low level threshold, attenuated by attack/release and ratio. It is better to reduce higher levels in post production (in the mix) to avoid losing quality/dynamics, as long as there's no clipping- unless you'll be adding amounts of saturation, then it really wouldn't matter :)

    Thanks. I'm not going crazy. I produced an album totally thorough headphones a year ago and everything was great. I have since heard it through a big system and discovered that it sounded awful. Mainly the Bass guitar was all over the place level wise. After a lot of time trying to figure out how to compress it properly I gave up and decided to just do it manually. Took about 4 hours to do a 4 minute song but I don't care. It's a labour of love.
